SHALAMAR ANNOUNCE APRIL SHOW DATES
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS KENNY THOMAS AND STEVE BROOKSTEIN
Standby for 'A Night to Remember' as 70's and 80's supergroup Shalamar return to the
UK this April for just four exclusive dates. Donʼt miss Howard Hewett, Jeffery Daniel and
Carolyn Griffey performing all their disco hits, A night to remember, I can make you feel
good, The second time around, There it is, Take that to the bank and many more. Plus
special guests British soul star Kenny Thomas and X-Factor winner Steve Brookstein.
Shalamar were originally created by Soul Train
booking agent Dick Griffey and masterminded by
Soul Train producer Don Cornelius. Regarded as
fashion icons and trendsetters they helped to
introduce 'body-popping' to the UK, where the
group had a string of hits with songs such as
"Take That To The Bank" (1978), "I Owe You
One" (1980) and 1982's "I Can Make You Feel
Good", “ A Night to Remember”, "There It Is" and
"Friends".
The album of the same title Friends was also a big seller in the UK in 1982 crossing the
genres of pop, disco and soul. The band's record sales in the UK increased dramatically
when Jeffery Daniel demonstrated his body-popping dancing on Top of the Pops,
premiering the Moonwalk on television for the first time. Michael Jackson who was a fan of
the group and in particular Daniel (after watching his dance moves on Soul Train) took his
then 12 year old sister Janet to see Shalamar perform at
Disneyland. Daniel went on to
teach Michael the Moonwalk and choreographed his "Bad" and "Smooth Criminal" videos.
Shalamar reformed in 2005, for the UK television series Hit Me Baby, One More Time with
original members Jeffrey Daniel, Howard Hewett, and with new singer
Carolyn Griffey
(long time friend and daughter of Shalamar founder and Solar Record boss Dick Griffey).
They reached the grand final on 22 May 2005, ultimately losing out to Shakin Stevens.
Music fashions may ebb and flow, but great voices
never go out of style. Double Platinum seller Kenny
Thomas, one of the best vocalists ever heard in British
soul made a huge impact with two Top 10 albums,
1991’s Voices and the 1993 sequel Wait For Me. In
addition there was the Top 10 smash ‘Thinking about
your Love’, 3 Top 20 singles – ‘Outstanding’, ‘Best of
You’ and ‘Trippin on your Love’ and 4 further Top 40 UK
singles. The album Voices went double platinum and
led to Brit Award Nominations as Best British Male
Vocalist and Best British Newcomer.
Steve Brookstein first came to the public's attention
in 2004 as the first ever winner of The X Factor.
Following this spectacular success, Steve went
straight to the top spot with his debut single 'Against
All Odds' and in June 2005 his debut album also hit
number one!
In 2008, Steve joined the company of 'Our House',
an Olivier Award winning musical and toured the UK.
Most recently Steve has written and recorded an
album with his wife Eileen Hunter, an accomplished
jazz singer.
